Common Questions

  • Our classes focus on a blend of accessible strength exercises, such as deadlifts and push-presses, paired with conditioning movements like sled pushes, kettlebell swings, or short circuits. The goal is to improve both strength and overall fitness. You’ll get personalized coaching in a small group team setting, allowing for a more customised experience.

  • No experience is necessary! Our classes are designed for all levels, from beginners to more advanced lifters. Our coaches will modify exercises and provide guidance to ensure you feel comfortable and challenged at your own pace.

  • Our small group classes typically consist of 6 to 8 participants. This allows for personalised attention from the coach, so you can work on technique and form while enjoying the camaraderie of a group setting.

  • Yes! Strength training is one of the most effective ways to build lean muscle. Our program targets all major muscle groups with progressive overload techniques, helping you increase muscle mass while improving overall strength and conditioning.

  • For optimal results, we recommend attending 2 to 3 sessions per week, allowing time for recovery. Blend with a functional fitness class to elevate your aerobic fitness is a perfect way to mix and match at NESC.

Consistency is key for building strength and power, but rest days are just as important for muscle recovery and avoiding burnout.

  • Absolutely! Send us a message to let us know which class you'd like to try, and we'll manually book you in.

Class Coaches

Stace

Meet Stace, our Head Functional Fitness Coach with a passion for making fitness fun and accessible for everyone. With three years of coaching under her belt, she thrives on the energy of group classes, always pushing her members to go further than they thought possible. Whether you're tackling a HIIT session or gearing up for a HYROX challenge, Stace has the expertise to guide you, with qualifications ranging from functional fitness and strength training to nutrition and group coaching. Her impressive achievements, like completing a 100km Ultra Marathon and conquering both the National and Yorkshire 3 Peaks, speak to her dedication and drive.

Stace believes that fitness should be adaptable, no matter your experience or ability. She loves helping people break through their limits and feel better about themselves. As a mum of one with a never-ending supply of enthusiasm (and coffee!), she's ready to help you smash your goals. And if you catch her snacking, you might spot her enjoying her favourite treat—an admittedly unhealthy amount of Light Philadelphia!

Andy

Meet Andy, our seasoned strength and sports specialist PT with an impressive 34 years of coaching experience. As a former track and field athlete who represented the RAF in 100m and 200m for several years, and a player of both volleyball and rugby union, Andy brings a wealth of athletic knowledge to his small group strength classes.

With qualifications like an MSc in Strength and Conditioning and UK Athletics Performance Coaching, he’s worked with athletes at every level, from local teams to Winter Youth Olympics Bobsleigh Silver Medalist, Mica McNeill. Snowboarding is his current passion, but Andy's love for sport extends far and wide. Andy is proud to provide strength and conditioning support to coach Middlesbrough Ladies FC, NE Regional Rhinos Netball team and Darlington Mowden Park's Ladies and Girls teams.

Andy’s small group strength classes keep him engaged, as he’s always adapting and refining programs to meet each member's needs. His favourite part is seeing members turn weaknesses into new strengths. When he's not coaching, Andy is a biker, family man, and dog dad with a serious love for vintage rock and punk music. In 2012, he had the honour of carrying the Olympic torch in Darlington, a testament to his lifelong dedication to sport and fitness.

Adam

Meet Adam, one of our specialist strength coaches at NESC. With 8 years of coaching experience and a background in competitive powerlifting, he's passionate about helping people discover the power of lifting. Adam specializes in squat, bench, and deadlift (SBD) coaching, especially for beginners looking to get into strength training. His qualifications include a Level 3 Personal Training certification, and a BSc Hons in Exercise Science, making him well-equipped to guide anyone, from complete novices to experienced lifters.

In his classes, like our small group strength training class, and introduction to SBD, Adam focuses on making workouts accessible and adaptable to individual goals. He finds joy in watching people grow—not just in the weight they lift, but in how strength training improves their confidence and well-being. When he's not coaching or competing himself, Adam volunteers at powerlifting events, and you might catch him enjoying a Lidl fresh bakery pretzel as his well-earned post-lifting snack!
