Our Introduction to SBD (Squat, Bench, Deadlift) is a 6-week program designed to take beginners from zero experience to confident, capable powerlifters. Whether you're new to lifting or looking to refine your technique, this course will guide you through the fundamentals of the three major powerlifting movements.
With expert coaching and progressive programming, you’ll learn proper form, improve your strength, and gain the knowledge needed to lift safely and effectively. By the end of the 6 weeks, you’ll not only feel stronger but also have the confidence to take on heavier weights and keep progressing!

SBD stands for Squat, Bench, and Deadlift—the foundational lifts in powerlifting. These movements target major muscle groups and are essential for building total-body strength. Focusing on these three lifts allows you to develop strength, stability, and confidence in key functional movements.

No prior experience is needed! This course is designed for beginners, and Adam will guide you through every step, teaching you the proper form and technique for each lift. You’ll build confidence as you progress at your own pace.

Each week, you’ll focus on learning and refining your squat, bench, and deadlift techniques, with progressive overload to ensure you’re gaining strength. You’ll also receive tips on mobility, recovery, and lifting strategies. By the end of the program, you’ll have the skills and confidence to perform each lift effectively and safely.

Just bring yourself, comfortable workout gear, and a positive attitude! All necessary equipment, including barbells, weights, and lifting accessories, will be provided in the gym. It is beneficial to have solid flat trainers for deadlifts, and potentially squatting, but not essential for the course.

You’ll have a solid foundation in powerlifting. Many participants continue training to further increase their strength with Adam, or one of our other powerlifting specialist coaches. Adam can advise you on your next steps.

Adam
Meet Adam, one of our specialist strength coaches at NESC. With 8 years of coaching experience and a background in competitive powerlifting, he's passionate about helping people discover the power of lifting. Adam specializes in squat, bench, and deadlift (SBD) coaching, especially for beginners looking to get into strength training. His qualifications include a Level 3 Personal Training certification, and a BSc Hons in Exercise Science, making him well-equipped to guide anyone, from complete novices to experienced lifters.
In his classes, like our small group strength training class, and introduction to SBD, Adam focuses on making workouts accessible and adaptable to individual goals. He finds joy in watching people grow—not just in the weight they lift, but in how strength training improves their confidence and well-being. When he's not coaching or competing himself, Adam volunteers at powerlifting events, and you might catch him enjoying a Lidl fresh bakery pretzel as his well-earned post-lifting snack!
